The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta opened today with a regal Sail-Past in honour of the birthday of the Regatta’s Patron – His Majesty the King of Thailand.
The fleet of racing and cruising boats filed past the Royal Thai Navy ships and headed to the startline for the first race of the 25th Anniversary Regatta.
A steady breeze saw the racing and cruising fleets sent on Round-the-Island courses. As the faster boats started to finish, Race Officer on the Racing Course, Jerry Rollin, decided to give the fleet a second, shorter race.
A strong turn-out in the IRC 1 Class is looking to challenge defending champion Ichi Ban for the title. The all Japanese crew on Karasu came out on top in the first race with a clear win on corrected time by almost two minutes.
Over on the cruising course, a battle of the Swans is shaping up with the all-Chinese 82-foot entry Chao Ren Plus One, up against two 76-footers with international crews.
