THA72 extends their lead in IRC 0 on Day Two of 2017 Phuket King’s Cup Regatta

Day Two of the 2017 Phuket King’s Cup Regatta picked up where Day One finished with good winds delivering some close and challenging racing early on in the proceedings. Towards the end of the day it was a different story as the breeze softened up but not until all classes got in some good racing and added more points to their respective scoreboards.

Race Director Simon James explained, “Course A ran windward-leeward, followed by the traditional south island course with all classes on Course B starting downwind. The fastest boats finished in around two and a half hours, up to five hours for the slower vessels. We had gusts up to 18 knots and an average wind speed of12 knots. A number of boats are affecting sail repairs following strong winds yesterday, but should all be back for tomorrow. Cruising class is subject to a performance handicap; Uminoko dominated but the grouping is brought into tight contention because of the handicap. A very competitive day in good winds”.

Consolidation continued across several classes with Kevin Whitcraft’s THA72 dominating all three of their IRC0 class races again while the all-Japanese team on Karasu, skippered by Yasuo Nanamori, continued their good form from Day One and with the drop race now in play they discard and earlier DSQ and sit top of the IRC 1 standings, tied on points with Loco (SIN).

Following yesterday’s faultless performance by Team Kata Rocks in IRC 2, the nearest rivals Big Boys Racing (Farrgo Express), managed to snatch a win in Race 4 and upset the picket fence. Not to worry though as Team Kata Rocks still retain the overall lead and as skipper Peter Dyer notes, “We have the lightest boat in the class and are hoping for some softer air tomorrow. Monday was amazing, we kept it tight and ran a conservative race as others were struggling with spinnakers and moving from side to side, so to get three bullets yesterday was incredible. We’re actually really happy today in terms of running a defensive race. We’re never going to be fastest on the longest J-shaped straight runs. It’s all about teamwork rather than the boat on a day like today, and keeping it consistent and taking advantage of opportunities. We will be ahead tomorrow in winds we expect to be lighter and more favorable. Great week so far”.

In the multihull classes Voodoo skippered by Hans Rahmann had a mixed day but finishes on top in Firefly 850 Sport. Thor continued to blaze a trail and has now clocked up five wins from five races, leaving in their wake many of the larger boats in the Multihull Racing class while Mojo Multihull Solutions still holds onto top spot in the Multihull Cruising class.
