30 April, 2018
On Sunday 29 April, Victoria Recreation Club won the Red Bull Three Peaks 2018 in Hong Kong. The crew, led by Nick Scott, finished the race in 3hr 51m 57s beating the previous record by over one minute in a very close race to the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club crew led by Ryan Whelan who finished first runner up.
The race took place on the south side of Hong Kong Island. The outrigger canoe race (extreme triathlon), which is organised by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC) had seven teams of six competitors swim, paddle and trail run up and back down three peaks. The 24km of paddling and a 12km trail running course started at RHKYC’s Middle Island clubhouse and finished at Shek O Rocky Bay Beach.
The race, which has been running for 11 years, is a primarily an outrigger canoe race and had four local teams from RHKYC and VRC and two teams from Singapore.
The 2018 edition is the inaugural event in partnership with Red Bull as Title Sponsor. The Race Organising Committee Chairperson, Ryan Wheelan says “The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and the greater outrigger canoe community in Hong Kong are delighted to have a powerful brand such as Red Bull involved with this event. We feel that this partnership will help develop this unique event from what was essentially an informal challenge between local clubs in the outrigger canoe off-season.”
