The Hong Kong to Hainan Race takes place within the scope of the China Coast Race Week, and starts following the China Coast Regatta on 18 October, 2018.
The China Coast Race Week combines the China Coast Regatta with the Hong Kong to Hainan Race.
The first Offshore Category 1 race from Hong Kong to Sanya, Hainan Island was held in 1997 and was a biennial alternative to the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race which took place until 2009 when logistical problems made the race impossible.
In 2012, The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, Chinese Yachting Association, Sanya Cultural and Sports Bureau and also Serenity Marina, Sanya, revived this 360nm “downhill” race to Sanya on Hainan Island, after a five year hiatus.
Competing boats set off from Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour.
This race offers the perfect starting point for boats going on to other events on the Asian Circuit in Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore, or further south to Australia.
The race record of 29h 25m 08s was set by Sam Chan on Ffree Fire, a 71’ ULDB sled in 2005. And in 2012, Sam Chan on his TP52 named Freefire set a new record of 28h 43m 54s.
